Reading Comprehension
Passage Breakdown
Many tribal communities want to save their traditional languages, but these languages can be lost when the dominant culture changes how people live. To teach children, communities first record the grammar and make lessons that go from simple to harder— the Northern Utes spent two years doing this. Writing an oral language is hard because some sounds don’t match letters and different dialects exist; the Northern Utes allowed varied spellings as long as the meaning was clear, and children learned quickly. Some say writing languages down isn’t needed because they were always spoken, but others do it now because oral traditions are fading.
Logic Breakdown
Find the passage's central claim in the opening and summary sentences: the passage says tribes value their traditional languages and, despite majority-culture barriers and other difficulties, some communities have documented and created teaching programs to preserve them (see the Northern Ute example).

Correct Answer
D
Option D accurately summarizes the passage: tribes recognize the value of their traditional languages and, despite difficulties, some have developed instruction programs. Support from the passage: 'Tribal communities in North America believe that their traditional languages are valuable resources that must be maintained.' and 'In some communities the barrier has been overcome because people have recognized that language loss is serious and have taken action to prevent it, primarily through community self-teaching.' The Northern Ute example shows a community that documented the language and adopted instruction: 'Within a year after the adoption of instruction in the Northern Ute language, even elementary school children could write and speak it effectively.'
