Reading Comprehension
Passage Breakdown
Scientists usually study complex things by breaking them into parts and examining each part. In the 1800s some critics called organicists argued that this destroys the whole-picture, saying parts get their identities only from their relationships in the whole. The passage says that idea is flawed: many traits aren’t essential even if always present, the view would make knowing anything impossible because you’d have to know every relationship, and the organicists misunderstood the analytic method (analysts first find the system’s overall rules and starting conditions), so the organicists didn’t give a good reason to reject analysis.
Logic Breakdown
Find the author's main conclusion (final paragraph) and list the twofold critique: (1) organicism's theory of internal relations is flawed (not all relation-determined properties define an entity and it makes knowledge impossible) and (2) organicists mischaracterized the analytic method. Choose the option that states both points.

Correct Answer
D
D most completely paraphrases the passage's conclusion: organicism fails as a valid challenge to the analytic method because its underlying theory is faulty and because organicists misrepresented how the analytic method works. Support from the passage: 'One problem with the theory of internal relations is that not all properties of an entity are defining characteristics: numerous properties are accompanying characteristics...'; 'The ultimate difficulty with the theory of internal relations is that it renders the acquisition of knowledge impossible.' And on misrepresentation: 'Organicists' criticism of the analytic method arose from their failure to fully comprehend the method... they overlooked the fact that before the proponents of the method analyzed the component parts of a system, they first determined both the laws applicable to the whole system and the initial conditions... Hence, organicists offered no valid reason for rejecting the analytic method or for adopting organicism as a replacement for it.' D captures both the faulty-theory critique and the charge of misrepresentation and so is the most accurate summary.
