Passage Breakdown

Both passages say music shows emotions more clearly than words, so putting words to music can deepen feelings but also mixes two arts and can weaken each one’s purity. Opera usually depends mostly on music: some operas put music first, while others try to balance music, words, plot, and staging. To judge an opera you should look at how the music and words work together in each scene—good music should serve the drama and add what other parts don’t, and good words should let the music and staging do their job—because opera’s special power comes from how these elements are joined.

Logic Breakdown

Find an issue explicitly raised in Passage A and check whether Passage B treats that same issue; focus on whether A attributes to music a special power to evoke or deepen emotion and whether B says the same.

16.

Which one of the following issues is addressed by the author of passage A but not by the author of passage B?

Correct Answer
C
Passage A explicitly discusses music's power to evoke and deepen feeling: 'Like images, words can excite the deepest emotions but are inadequate to express the emotions they excite. Music is more adequate, and hence will often seize an emotion that may have been excited by images or words, deepen its expression, and, by so doing, excite still deeper emotion.' A also says opera 'depends for its aesthetic value...upon its emotional range — a region dominated by the musical element.' Passage B, by contrast, focuses on types of opera and on how music should be judged in relation to other elements ('In any event...neither the music nor the poetry of the libretto should be judged in isolation. The music is good not if it would make a good concert piece but if it serves the particular situation...') but does not discuss music's capacity to evoke emotional responses. Therefore C is uniquely addressed by A.
